Scriptures: Leviticus 16:5, 7-10, 15, 18-19, 20-22; Luke 23:13-25; Mat 27:16-26
– The Day of Atonement is all about the High Priest. Leviticus 16:1-4 shows us that the High Priest must be sober, must wash himself, and must dress properly to enter Yahuwah’s presence. Crucifixion day was centered around Yeshua, our High Priest.
– Someone must be left alive and set FREE as part of the atonement process. In Leviticus, one goat was kept alive and set free into the wilderness, even though he carried all the sins of the people on himself. In the New Testament, we see it was Bar Rabban, or Barabbas, who was set free, though he was a sinner and deserved to die. If Bar Rabban had not been set free, would Yeshua’s atonement have fulfilled Scripture, would it have meant as much? Either a goat carrying all the sins of the people, or a sinner, had to be set free in order for the Atonement process to fulfill Yahuwah’s command.
– Someone must die as a sin offering for the sinful people. One innocent goat had to die in Leviticus. On Crucifixion Day, our innocent Savior, Lord Yeshua HaMashiach had to die for all the sins of all the people of all time.
– The blood of the sacrificed goat must be sprinkled on the atonement lid and before the atonement lid (Judgment Seat). Blood of the sacrificed goat must also be put on all the horns of the altar. Sprinkled 7 times on the altar. Yeshua’s blood dripped upon the earth, his altar that terrible day. Some believe the Cross of Messiah Yeshua stood above a hidden chamber containing the Ark of the Covenant. His blood dripped onto the atonement lid of the Ark of the Covenant. It would make perfect sense. At this time, only Yahuwah himself knows if Yeshua’s blood dripped down through the earth into a secret chamber hiding the Ark of the Covenant. This is a mystery that will be revealed when Yeshua returns.
– The live goat had to be presented, take on all the sins of the people, and then be SET FREE in the wilderness. It was a requirement of the Torah that a (goat) Bar Rabban sinful person must be presented before the Judgment Seat, then released into the wilderness. Someone had to be set free that day to have the significance and requirements of the Day of Atonement fulfilled on Crucifixion Day. Bar Rabban in his sinful state, represented the goat who had all the sins of the people placed on him by the High Priest.
– The person who let the departing goat go free must wash his body. Look what Pontius Pilate did in Matthew 27:24, “So when Pilate saw that he could not do anything, but instead a riot was starting, he took water, washed his hands in front of the crowd and said, “I am innocent of the blood of this innocent man. See to it yourselves.”” Leviticus 16:26, “The man who let the departing goat go free must wash his clothes and bathe his body in water; after that, he may come back into the camp.” Pontius Pilate fulfilled a Torah requirement without even realizing it.
– The sacrificed goat was taken outside the camp, per Lev. 16:27. Yeshua was executed outside the city, at Gulgoleth, per Matthew 27:33. Hebrews 13:11-13, “For the blood of the animals killed for sins is brought by the high priest into the set-apart place, while their bodies are burned outside the camp. 12So Yeshua also suffered outside the city gate, in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. 13Let us therefore go to him outside the camp, bearing his shame.”
– The original Day of Atonement occurred on the 10th of the 7th month, so Yeshua only partially fulfilled this feast, a complete fulfillment will then occur in the future on a 10th of a future 7th month, upon Yeshua’s return to earth. Judgment Day. Those who do not repent, or turn around from their sins, will face the Judge on that day.
– Day of Atonement was an annual Feast/Fast day, but Yeshua only died once for all sinners. Romans 6:10, “For in regard to the death that he died to sin, he died once for all. However, the life that he lives, he lives it for Yahuwah.” Hebrews 7:27, “He does not need, unlike the high priests, to offer up daily sacrifices, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He did this once for all, when he offered himself.” Hebrews 9:12, “It was not by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood that he entered into the most set-apart place once for all and secured our eternal redemption.” Hebrews 10:10, “And by that will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Yeshua Messiah once for all.”
Our final eternal redemption will be complete upon Yeshua’s return, when we are set free from these sinful bodies and receive our immortal sinless bodies. I am really looking forward to that glorious day. I trust you are too.
