Rom 7:1-4 SOMB, “Or do you not know, brothers, for I am speaking to people who know Torah, that the Torah controls a person for as long as he lives? 2For the married woman is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. 3So then, while her husband is living, if she lives with another man, she will be called an adulteress (child molestation, rape, incest, fornication, bestiality, homosexuality, lesbianism, LGBTQ+, polyamory, pornography, foreign pagan lineage, incest, prostitution, etc.). But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so she is not an adulteress if she lives with another man. 4Therefore, my brothers, you were also made dead to the (penalty of the) Torah through the body of Messiah. This is so that you could be joined to another, that is, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might produce fruit for Yahuwah.”

Romans 7:1-3 is pretty self-explanatory. A dead person on earth no longer can observe or obey any Torah commands. They are dead, not knowing anything. A married spouse, man or woman, is widowed once their spouse dies. The dead spouse can no longer observe a contract of marriage, therefore the living spouse is immediately widowed. There is no such thing as a dead person’s marriage contract, or divorce contract for that matter. This is why this passage is not covered in the Marriage and Fidelity Bible study, which is not Gene’s study by the way. I just found it on the internet years ago and edited it a little for more usefulness in teaching about marriage and divorce. This passage in Romans 7 could be added to the Marriage and Fidelity study, though, because it does mention adultery. Once a person is widowed, that person, man or woman, is free to marry someone else of the opposite sex, as long as it is in the Lord Yeshua, as long as you marry a believer. I highly recommend believing people avoid marrying pagan folk. Today, we receive a death certificate when a spouse dies. That is really all the proof a new mate should need to see to know a person is released from a marriage contract and free to marry again.

Now, verse 4 is where the good stuff is. It may appear at first glance that Paul is saying that believers are no longer under the Torah, or obligated to obey or observe the Torah, like the replacement theology folks believe and teach. But that is not what Paul taught. He taught that we are dead to the penalty of the Torah, or Law, because Yeshua’s death in our place upon the execution stake. Since we are now dead to the penalty of the Torah, we are free to marry Messiah Yeshua and produce fruit, fruit of the Ruach and disciples, for the kingdom of Yahuwah! The Torah contains a death penalty for many many sins, including adultery. That’s why we need Yeshua to redeem us, to save us from the death penalty of the Torah. Without faith in Yeshua’s death, burial, and resurrection, no one will enter the kingdom of Yahuwah.

How do we know we have interpreted verse 4 correctly? See Galatians 3:13, “Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the Torah by becoming a curse for us, for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree (execution stake).””

The curse of the Torah is, of course, the death penalty for our sin. We are redeemed from this curse, from this death penalty. We are eternally grateful to Yeshua for providing a way for us to live with him forever! Praise his glorious name forever! HalleluYah! I hope this explains Romans 7:1-4.
